BissPlPaIllinois Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) was honored to receive the Richard J. Phelan Profile in Courage Award from Planned Parenthood Illinois Action for his fight against cuts to child care and women’s health care in Illinois, as well for as his support of sexual health education and reproductive rights.

Biss, chairman of the senate’s Human Services Committee, is a champion for women and families and has earned a reputation as a thoughtful, effective elected official, PPIA officials noted. He has passed important legislation on such key issues as retirement security, civil rights and access to reproductive health care.

“Planned Parenthood Illinois Action is proud to have Sen. Biss as a partner and champion in our fight to ensure reproductive rights for everyone in Illinois,” event co-chairwoman Celena Roldan-Moreno said upon presenting Biss with the award Thursday night.

Richard Phelan was Cook County Board chairman from 1990 to 1994 and fought for women’s reproductive rights at Cook County Hospital during his tenure.

Biss received the award during a Chicago event marking the 43rd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade court decision.
