I'm reaching out to invite you to the final forum in our Critical Issues Series. On Nov. 13, please join me and Representative Elaine Nekritz as we explore the implications of Illinois' local government structure.

As you may know, Illinois is home to more units of local government than any other state -- by quite a wide margin! Academics, legislators, community leaders and political scientists (not to mention taxpayers) interested in understanding and possibly streamlining these units of government have made strides, but much work remains to be done.

I hope you'll join us to talk about what we know, what actions we might take, and what challenges stand in our way.

Biss100On October 27 at 7 p.m., I'll be joined by Morty Schapiro, President of Northwestern University, and Merrill Irving, Associate Vice President of Continuing Education, Training and Workforce Development at Oakton Community College. Together we will be discussing the cost of higher education -- trends, implications and potential action steps.

We stress the importance of pursuing a higher degree to our students, yet the cost is difficult for most families, and prohibitive for others. I know this is an important issue for many members of our community, and I'm eager to share with them the insights of this terrific panel.

I hope you'll be able to join us! The details are below, and the rest of our Critical Issues Series schedule is here.

edfunding091714Thanks to everyone who joined us at our forum, School Funding in Illinois: Opportunities, challenges and striking a balance. This is a complex, often technical and very emotional topic, and I am very appreciative of the thoughtful and productive conversation we had throughout the evening. Illinois' education funding formula is indisputably broken, and the only way we can start to fix it is through these difficult discussions.

I'm particularly grateful to our panelists for their time and expertise: Paul Goren, the superintendent of Evanston/Skokie School District 65, and Senator Andy Manar, the sponsor of Senate BIll 16, a piece of legislation that reforms our school funding formula.

Senator Manar's PowerPoint presentation can be found pdfhere, and a video of the presentation can be found here.

I want to reiterate, as I did at the forum, that SB16 is a work in progress. The reason the forum was so productive, in my view, is because there's real room to make changes to the bill and to address the serious concerns of our school districts. Your input is crucial to producing a successful outcome, and I hope you'll continue to send your thoughts and concerns our way.

As always, please feel free to give my office a call at 847-568-1250, and I look forward to staying in touch. You can see the rest of our Critical Issues Series schedule here.

Please join me at the next forum we're hosting in our Critical Issues Series. This month's topic is School Funding in Illinois: Opportunities, challenges and striking a balance. I'm excited to be joined by two fantastic panelists: Paul Goren, the recently appointed superintendent of Evanston/Skokie School District 65, and my colleague Andy Manar, the lead sponsor of Senate Bill 16.

As you may know, SB16 proposes to revamp our state's education funding formula, which is undeniably broken. This is an extremely important topic, and a difficult one. It's clear that schools are sorely underfunded in much of Illinois, leading to a real and searing injustice. The state is still experiencing significant fiscal challenges, and successful reform must be sensitive to the challenges facing all school districts, including those that are not currently underfunded.

This complexity necessitates a very thorough and nuanced discussion, so I hope you'll be able to join me next Tuesday evening. Event details are below; you can see the rest of our Critical Issues Series schedule here.

  • What: School Funding in Illinois: Opportunities, challenges and striking a balance
  • Date: Tuesday, September 16th

  • Panelists: District 65 Superintendent Paul Goren, Illinois State Senator Andy Manar
