WHAT: Patent Trolls and Chicago's Tech Community: What's at Stake, a roundtable discussion of "patent trolling," which refers to the practice of fraudulently threatening to sue businesses for alleged patent violations. The "patent troll" may not own the patent at all, the patent may have expired and/or the victim company may not be engaged in any illegal use of the patented technology.

State Senator Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) has introduced Senate Bill 3405, which passed the state Senate last week, to make this type of patent fraud illegal in Illinois.

032614 js 0741CLSPRINGFIELD — State Senator Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) issued the following statement after hearing the governor's budget proposals:

I appreciate the severity of the fiscal situation laid out by the governor in his speech today. Legislators have had to make tough choices, reducing spending by $5.7 billion during the past five years and cutting essential services, education spending and infrastructure investment. There are more tough choices ahead of us, especially as we grapple with potential changes to our tax policy.

These conversations will be difficult but important, and I stand ready to work with the governor and my colleagues in the General Assembly to do what is hard but necessary – on both the revenue and spending sides of the ledger.
