First, I want to thank everyone who came out to our pension forum last month; I appreciate how difficult this process has been for many of you, and I am grateful for and reliant on your consistent and constructive input.

I am also writing to invite you to the second of our six forums as part of our Critical Issues Series. Our topic for August is Safety, Freedom, and the Status of Gun Laws in Illinois. We'll discuss the Firearm Concealed Carry Act, the new law that allows individuals to obtain a permit to carry concealed firearms in public.

Event details

  • What: Safety, Freedom, and the Status of Gun Laws in Illinois
  • When: 3 p.m. Aug. 11
  • Where: The Levy Center, 300 Dodge Ave., Evanston
  • Panelists: Kwame Raoul, State Senator, 13th District; Colleen Daley, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence; Marjorie Fujara, attending physician in the Division of Child Protective Services, Department of Pediatrics at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America

We're fortunate to be joined by such a distinguished panel. Kwame played a lead role in negotiating this issue in Springfield, Colleen is an influential and savvy advocate, and Marjorie is a health care provider and a terrific grassroots activist. Between the three of them, we'll learn a great deal about how exactly we've arrived at this point on this difficult and emotional issue, and we can have a thorough conversation about where to go from here. I hope you can join us!

Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone you think might be interested and call my office if you have any questions! The dates and topics for the rest of the series can be found here.

The conference committee on pension reform meets Wednesday in the Bilandic building in Chicago. It is an honor to serve on the Conference Committee on Senate Bill 1. I take very seriously my responsibility to consider the opinions and concerns of all Illinois citizens, and I hope you will reach out to me with your thoughts and ideas.

As you may know, the committee has met twice in Chicago and will meet for a third time at 3 p.m. July 8 in Springfield in room 409 of the Capitol. This is a public hearing and all are welcome to attend; you can also watch or listen to the committee here.

The committee is working hard to communicate ideas to the systems' actuaries so as to be as informed as possible about the potential impacts of the proposals we're considering. While this is a strong indication of progress, it is unrealistic to hope that we would have an actuarial analysis in hand by July 9. We will continue working on a constant basis, and I'll be sure to keep you updated as we move forward.

Please call my district office at 847-568-1250 with any questions.
